Hopefully this title conjured up the old Rod Stewart song and not any possibility that I was being serious... I want to use it to delve into the age-old question posed to voice actors: how would you describe your voice?
"Sexy" is not a word that ever comes up in my mind to describe my voice. Add to that "hip," "urban," and "mature," which are all key words that come up in audition directives -- whenever I see those descriptions, I click "delete" and go on my merry way.
Then something strange happened. I looked at the tags that some people (strangers who don't know me) had left after hearing my demos -- and out of six tags, three were "silky," "sexy" and "sexy woman". O.o
Eh, still didn't convince me. THEN I entered the Edge Studio script contest. I'll be honest -- a big reason for entering was the prizes. First prize was two free months of Edge Phase 4 webinars, which I had already been doing for the past four months for free due to winning it at Faffcon. I was on my last free month, and like a meth addict, I was frantic to find another way to score... Yes, I could buy them, but where's the fun in that?
So the copy for that particular week's script contest was late-night chat-room fare -- you know, the kind that accompanies video of scantily-clad young girls laughing and giggling and pretending to talk on the phone...? NOT my typical voice job. Not even in the ballpark. But you can't win if you don't play, so I channeled my best Marilyn Monroe and gave it a shot.
And won. :0) Woot. Here's my entry: http://www.edgestudio.com/script-contests/past-winners
(If you still want to hear my entry, you have to click the link, then scroll down to "Contest ending Friday, January 20"...)
Now I've got two more months of webinars on my calendar. And am I going to start auditioning for "sexy" spots...? I guess we'll see... ;0)
